BC Wildfire Service crews have reached a major milestone in their battle with the St. Mary’s River Wildfire as the 4,640 hectare blaze is classified as ‘being held’ as of Friday afternoon.
The Regional District of East Kootenay says Evacuation Alerts for 667 dwellings has been lifted, including Canadian Rockies International Airport.
Evacuation Alerts have also been rescinded for Wasa, Ta Ta Creek, HaHas, Fort Steele, Woods Corner West, Lakit Lake, McGinty Road, Clearview Road and Sommerfeldt Road.
Evacuation Orders and Alerts in the community of ʔaq̓am remain intact, the community will be posting updates to its Facebook page.

As the BC Wildfire Service continues to make progress on the St. Mary’s River Fire, which this afternoon was classified as BEING HELD, the RDEK is rescinding a number of the Evacuation Alerts.
“The RDEK is rescinding the Evacuation Alert for 667 dwellings in proximity of the fire. We are so grateful to the BC Wildfire Service for their tireless efforts throughout the past 12 days,” says Information Officer Loree Duczek. “This is another positive step forward and I know residents who have been on Alert will be excited to hear this news.”
Evacuation Alerts have been rescinded in the Wasa, Ta Ta Creek, HaHas (Stoney) Lake, Old Airport, Lakit Lake, McGinty Road, Clearview Road, Sommerfeldt Road, Woods Corner West, Campsall Road and Fort Steele areas, including Fort Steele Heritage Town and the Canadian Rockies International Airport. Evacuation Alerts and Orders in the community of ʔaq’am remain in effect and details will continue to be available on their status on the ʔaq’am Facebook page.
The Area Restriction remains in effect for all Crown land around the St. Mary’s River wildfire area. Traffic is only allowed for local residents to access their homes with valid proof of residency. There have been no other changes to the status of Evacuation Orders or Alerts on any of the other fires within the East Kootenay, including the Horsethief Creek, Yearling Creek, or Lladnar Creek fires.
