Calling all Colts!
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Cranbrook Colts hockey club, and preliminary plans are being set up to mark the milestone.
Cranbrook Colts 50th Anniversary Reunion Committee member, and former player, general manager and president Jay Nelson, wants to hear from alumni who might be interested in celebrating the half-century milestone.
“We’d like to have some ice time where the guys can suit up and come out and play a little bit of puck and have some fun,” Nelson says. “We’re also looking at getting a little bit of ice time at the Memorial [Arena] where all the banners are hanging.”
He says no firm timetable has been set as of yet for the event due to COVID-19 restrictions, but hopes to hold the celebration this winter.
Nelson says it’s great to see that the Colts franchise still holds a place in the hearts of local hockey fans.
“There was a group of builders here in the community who thought that junior hockey would thrive in the community,” says Nelson. “Their vision certainly turned out to be very valuable. Certainly, a lot of champions came out of this community during that period.”
The Cranbrook Colts began play in the KIJHL in the 1970-71 season, and won three championships in the old Rocky Mountain Junior Hockey League through the 1990s.
Notable Cranbrook Colts alumni include former NHLers Bob Murdoch, John Klemm and Brad Lukowich among others.
